Auction Roundup: SA wines most in demand under the hammer in 2020

SOLD FOR OVER R5000 A BOTTLE

THE FOLLOWING fine wines of the Cape fetched the highest prices at various auctions over the past 12 months or so – all attracting bids of more than R5000 a bottle. None of these beauties sold for over R1000 on release – the golden oldies originally changed hands for less than R100 – and in terms of current vintages only two of them carried asking prices of R1K plus in 2020.

Collectors might find it interesting to gauge these auction highlights in the context of South Africa’s most ‘investment-worthy‘ wines in 2019, as reported on by the Cape Town merchant Wine Cellar using data from Strauss & Co’s auctions in Johannesburg and Cape Town as well as from the Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction held in Stellenbosch.
