UPS AND DOWNS were the order of the day at Strauss & Co’s mid-year fine wine online auction on 7 June 2021. Some of the wines highlighted by the Wine Cellar merchants and the auctioneers prior to the sale with a Stellenbosch theme didn’t attract quite the level of interest that was anticipated. The case of Laurence Graff Reserve 2011 Cabernet, for which they were asking a minimum of R24K, went unsold. The 2012 and 2015 vintages of the red blend Keet First Verse fetched more than the 2011 at R8208 for a six-pack. Whereas six bottles of the Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage 2006 fetched R16 415, the same price reached for the 2013 Mvemve Raats De Compostella, more than what was paid for the hyped-up 2011 (R15 243) but not as much as that for the 2008 (R29 313). The Boschkloof Epilogue 2015? R8208, versus R10 553 for a case of the 2014 vintage.
