5 STARS in Platter's 2025 SA Wine Guide, from one of the country's top winemakers in Donovan Rall, using grapes grown on the mountains in the back of beyond, priced at under R150pb and not yet sold out… Not even released yet! The WinterHoek Sauvignon Blanc 2023 from Callender Peak out Ceres way had not yet been labelled at the time of writing but was expected to be available from around mid-December '24 at R135 per bottle.
And surely every South African (sweet) wine lover is familiar with the Cape Tawny from KWV of Paarl, a non-vintage, Port-style, fortified dessert that has ‘always' been highly rated yet remains on offer for just over R100pb. More amazing though is that another sweet, the top-rated Cape Port in the 2025 edition of Platter's Guide, is also priced at under R150pb… The Port-Style ‘Wine of the Year' as chosen by Platter's tasters is not from the KWV, producer of many great fortified wines of various types for going on a century, nor is it from Calitzdorp, the country's so-called ‘Port Capital' and home of champion Port houses Boplaas and De Krans… It's from Bergsig Estate in the Breedekloof: the 2018 Bergsig Cape LBV, scored 97/100 and selling for just R128pb!
