IT’S ARGUABLE that at under R100 a bottle, if you’re weighing up South Africa’s various wine categories, Sauvignon Blanc generally offers best value-for-money. Sure, there are now very few top Sauvignons in the SA Wine Classification at this level, price wise. However, at the time of writing, five of the finalists in the country’s 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Top 10 competition were selling for under R100pb, and of all the country’s wines in this price bracket to have warranted a good review from one or more of the top panels in the world so far this year, the numbers tell a story: 15 Sauvignon Blanc, 5 Chenin Blanc, 5 Red Blends, 3 Fortified Dessert, 3 Rosé, 3 Shiraz, 3 White Blends, 2 Pinotage …
