South African Brandy

Chenin Blanc, Colombar and Ugni Blanc are the grape varieties most commonly used to make the base wine for some very fine brandies in South Africa. The word brandy (brandywine) is derived from the Dutch word ‘brandewijn’, meaning burnt or distilled wine, and there are several basic styles as described by the SA Brandy Foundation. Sipping brandies are typically bottled at a strength of 38% Alc and include between 30% and 100% potstill brandy aged in small oak barrels (less than 340L) for a minimum of three years but usually longer, the balance coming from column stills. Double distillation is the norm using copper potstills, whereas continuous distillation takes place using column stills, made from stainless steel or copper. The terms often used to describe the length of time a brandy has been matured in barrels include: VS (at least three years), VSOP (at least five years) and XO (at least 10 years).
