Cederberg Private Cellar and Kanonkop fetch top bids at CWG Auction

AT THE 2021 Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction hosted by Bonhams in London, fetching the highest prices on the day were Abrie Beeslaar and the Kanonkop Estate in Stellenbosch, and David Nieuwoudt of the Cederberg Private Cellar. The 2018 vintage of Kanonkop CWG Paul Sauer (Cab-led red blend) attracted bids of up to R2500 per 750ml bottle and R2125 pb on average, while the 2019 Cederberg Teen die Hoog Shiraz fetched as much as R2444 pb and an average of R2208 pb.

Established in 1982, the Guild comprises some of South Africa’s greatest winemakers – 46 at last count – whose standards of excellence have been recognised by their peers. Membership of the Guild is by invitation only and the CWG is committed to help develop the country’s wine industry through innovative practices and the sharing of knowledge.

  • The 37th Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction raised R9.8m with a total of 1734 cases (6x750ml) sold. The average price per case amounted to R5684, with an average price for red wines of R6016 and R4697 for white wines… With prices reaching R15 000 per case (6x750ml), new records were set for Merlot (Hartenberg CWG Auction Merlot 2018 from Carl Schultz at R6500), Mourvèdre (Beaumont Whole Bunch Mourvèdre 2017 by Sebastian Beaumont at R5500), White Blends (Lismore Here Comes The Sun 2020 from Samantha O’Keefe at R7500) and for Shiraz (Cederberg Teen Die Hoog Shiraz from David Nieuwoudt at R14 667)… International buyers purchased 37% of the total wine offering, but as always, the predominant support (63%) was still from a loyal domestic base. Globally, buyers from UK, Denmark, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Namibia, Poland, Sweden, Australia and the USA purchased auction wine…
