SHIRAZ from South Africa's Hartenberg, Kleine Zalze and Cederberg cellars were among the top gold medallists at the international Syrah du Monde 2023. Contested by 20 countries, the competition takes place in Ampuis, a town in the Rhône region of France, where 80 of the 241 wines assessed during the panel tastings earned gold (34) and silver (46) medals.
Australian producers topped the rankings, with four of their gold medallists among the Top 10. Surprisingly, the French managed just one Shiraz in the Top 10, which also featured wines from Italy, Spain, Morocco, Turkey and the USA.
The three SA stars of the show have very good track records, with The Stork from Hartenberg in Bottelary, Stellenbosch, one of the best in the SA Wine Classification – as it should at more than three times the price of their ‘standard' Shiraz!
