Another reason to travel down to Jonkershoek in Stellenbosch

THISTLE & WEED is what winemaker Stephanie Wiid and viticulturist Etienne Terblanche call their boutique cellar alongside the Jonkershoek Road in Stellenbosch – on the Leef op Hoop Farm before you enter the valley en route to the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. They are Chenin Blanc specialists who also have a Cab Franc and unusual red and white blends in their range, made from grapes grown in various parts of the Cape winelands. The Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc – included in the SA Wine Classification – has a particularly good track record, originating in a Paarl vineyard planted over 60 years ago and named after the ‘devils thorns’ that cling to the soles of your shoes should you go wandering between the rows.

“When we cast our minds back,” says Wiid,  “we juggled a nomadic existence, crafting wines in rented cellar space across various wineries. Tastings often happened in unconventional settings – makeshift tables on barrels or upturned basket presses!” Approaching the brand’s 10th anniversary, drawing inspiration from the weeds that flourish among the vines, they share a love for the land and its fruits that has spilled over to their new tasting room, “an unpretentious refuge for those seeking a leisurely escape, where every detail invites you to unwind and appreciate life’s simple pleasures.”

Booking essential. A couple of different wine-tasting experiences to choose from. Cheese and charcuterie platters also on offer.
