Veritas Vertex Award goes to Bordeaux-style Orchestra from KWV

SOUTH AFRICA’S 2020 Veritas Awards attracted some 1300 entries that were assessed over five days by 64 judges teamed-up into panels of three – all local wine experts, as the travel restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the participation of international critics. The most keenly contested categories were Red Blends (181 entries), Sauvignon Blanc (149), Cabernet Sauvignon (123), Shiraz (113), Chenin Blanc (102), Chardonnay (102) and Pinotage (70), with 63 wines earning double gold medals

The Veritas Vertex Award went to KWV of Paarl, whose Bordeaux-style red blend The Mentors Orchestra 2018 was the highest-scoring wine overall and a particularly worthy winner given its track record: one of the Top 10 in the SA Red Blend Classification and included in the Top Wine SA Hall of Fame. WO Western Cape, with the grapes sourced from Stellenbosch, Paarl and elsewhere.

  • The Vertex Award for the overall champion wine represents the climax of proceedings at the Veritas Awards function. In 2020, the magnificent hand-crafted glass trophy was handed over to the KWV Mentors senior winemaker Izelé van Blerk – the first time that a red wine has won the Veritas Vertex Award since first being awarded in 2017.

The Veritas Awards tastings of Double Gold winners in London and Hong Kong will continue in June 2021 after being put on hold in London, while smaller events were held in Hong Kong, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Vinventions, a global leader in complete wine closure solutions, has confirmed that it will continue its sponsorship to fly the Vertex winners to London for the tastings and then on to visit the Berthomieu-Ermitage cooperages and several wineries in France. The 2019 Vertex winner, owner and GM of Domaine Des Dieux Megan Mullis with the Des Dieux Chardonnay 2015, will be joining Izelé van Blerk for the London tasting.
