1st Global Cabernet Franc Masters dominated by… South Africa

“EXQUISITE” is how the top wines were described by judges at the inaugural Global Cabernet Franc Masters hosted by The Drinks Business publication in the UK, where South African producers excelled. The variety is thought to have originated in Spain, with the leading examples traditionally hailing from the Loire and Bordeaux regions of France. Yet in this, the first international panel tasting of note in 2024, most of the wines submitted were from outside France – only two of the medallists were French and none of them were from Spain. Instead, the competition was dominated by various other countries around the world, with four Cape cellars among the eight producers awarded the ultimate accolade of a Master Award – scored at least 97 in terms of their 100-point scoring system.
