Stark-Condé… Hall of Fame winery, good-value lunch for under R200

STARK-CONDÉ. In the Jonkershoek Valley, Stellenbosch. On the Oude Nektar farm, to the south-east of the town. Home to one of South Africa’s most highly rated white blends, a Sauvignon Blanc of note, a fine Cabernet Sauvignon and then some. Among the recommendations at their Postcard Café: either chicken piccata (R145pp) or lightly-cured hake (R195pp) served with the Field Blend of four white varieties (R75 per glass); butter chicken curry (R185) served with the Round Mountain Sauvignon Blanc (R75); or how about cold roast pork and crispy crackling (R195) with either the Stellenbosch Cab (R98) or top-tier Three Pines Cab (R165).

Aside from fine dining – click here for the very best restaurants on the Cape’s wine farms – there are destinations along the country’s various wine routes that appeal both as producers of such consistently good drinks that they’re included in the Top Wine SA Hall of Fame, and as the setting for tables where you can lunch inside or out for quite a bit less than you might expect. Stark-Condé is such a place.
