THE TOP price paid at Strauss & Co's timed, online Bordeaux-themed auction concluded on 21 October '24 was R32 830 (US$1862) for a bottle of South Africa's GS Cabernet 1966 – higher than the R25 795 (US$1463) paid at the sale for a bottle of 1982 Mouton Rothschild, one of the most esteemed wines from the First Growth estates in Bordeaux, France, and the highest price paid for a non-SA lot on the day.
The George Spies Cab is one of the Cape's mystery wines, inasmuch as the exact origin is uncertain. The wine was somewhat experimental, made by the late George Spies at the Monis cellar in Paarl. The grapes are thought to have come from Durbanville, but this has yet to be established beyond doubt. The record price for the 1966 vintage stands at R91 040, paid for a single bottle on auction in 2021.
