THE 2024 VINTAGE of Mullineux ‘The Gris' Semillon WO Swartland fetched the top price at the 2025 Cape Winemakers Guild Auction conducted by Strauss & Co at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. “An extremely rare variety, Semillon Gris is a uniquely South African phenomenon,” says winemaker Andrea Mullineux of Riebeek Kasteel. “This wine originates from a heritage vineyard planted in 1960 on the granite slopes of the Paardeberg [outside Malmesbury]. Cuttings from this site were carefully propagated over a decade, culminating in the replanting of South Africa’s first officially recognised Sémillon Gris at our regeneratively farmed, certified organic Roundstone estate.” Total production: 60 cases (360 bottles), of which 24 cases were sold at the 2025 CWG Auction. Natural fermentation (wild yeast). Alc 14%, 2g/l residual sugar, 6.2g/l total acidity, pH of 3.14.
