New Cape wine festivals focusing on Piekenierskloof, Amphora

First of their kind

THE Citrus & Wine Affair at the Modderfontein Old Village in Citrusdal on Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August will showcase the wines of the Cederberg and Piekenierskloof – or rather, the wines made using grapes from this area, which in many cases are sold by cellars well over 100km to the south of Citrusdal.

The Amphora Wine Festival at Lourensford Estate in Somerset West on 29 August will celebrate a curated selection of wines crafted in traditional clay amphoras, which are being used by an increasing number of winemakers throughout the Cape as alternatives or in addition to oak barrels during the fermentation and ageing processes.

At the time of writing, although tickets to these potentially rather interesting events on the SA wine calendar had already gone on sale, the organisers had not yet announced the names of the wines that will be available for tasting and purchase, nor those of the wine producers who'll be presenting them…
