Tuscan-inspired Bordeaux-style Collector’s Red of note

Every three months, members of Caroline’s Quarterly Wine Club look forward to more new discoveries from top South African producers. “Wine lovers can sit back and have our fine selections delivered wherever you are in the country,” says Caroline Rillema of Caroline’s Fine Wine Cellar in Cape Town. “We select the finest wines. Simply choose one or more of the quarterly packages and you’ll receive a different selection every three months for as long as you wish. Hassle free!”

The 6-bottle case of Collector’s Red on offer to club members at R2490 until the end of March 2025 focuses on the culmination of a dream:

Baccō Estate Red Blend 2020
Baccō is a project born out of Nathan Jankelowitz’s passion for premium-quality wines. Long inspired by the opulence of Italy’s Tuscan region and its Super-Tuscan wines, Nathan dreamt of bringing this holistic, experiential brand of luxury to South African wine lovers, a dream that has become a magnificent reality in the foothills of the Simonsberg-Paarl mountains.
This, Baccō’s flagship red blend, is only produced in vintages of exceptional quality. The 2020 comprises Cabernet Sauvignon (61%), Malbec (32%) and Merlot (7%). Matured for 22 months in barrique. Only 3000 bottles made.
At the 2023 Global Fine Wine Challenge in Australia, the Baccō Estate Red Blend 2020 took trophy honours in the Bordeaux Blends class with a top score of 97 out of 100. An outstanding achievement against some of the most highly regarded wines of the New World. “In the space of a mere two vintages, our young vineyards under the expert management of Simonit and Sirch exceeded all expectations,” says Jankelowitz. “In the cellar, this small crop of ultra-premium fruit is nurtured by the winning duo of winemaker Julia Baline and consulting cellarmaster Martin Smith into mesmerising expressions of the terroir. We are immensely proud and grateful for this major international recognition.”
On the nose and palate: refined, sporting classic blackcurrant, lead-pencil and plum with a whiff of rosemary; textured mouthfeel with bright acidity lining the deep, dark fruit core; integrated tannins. Mature in a cool cellar until 2030 or, if broaching now, decant for two hours. Good with grilled beef, roast lamb or liver and onions. R415pb.
