FOR THE third year in succession, VUUR at Remhoogte Wine Estate on the slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch has been ranked among the World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants as judged by a global network of anonymous critics. Commissioned by the Upper Cut Media House in London, 24 “experienced professionals in gastronomy, hospitality and meat” evaluated over 1200 restaurants around the globe according to “detailed criteria including meat quality, sourcing, ageing, cooking technique, service, winelist, ambience and overall authenticity.” At No. 1 on the 2026 list: La Cúpula in Jiménez de Jamus, Spain. At No. 2: Margaret in Sydney, Australia. No. 3: Laia in Hondarribia, Spain. No. 4: I Due Cippi dal 1976 in Saturnia, Italy.
VUUR placed 52nd and Best in Africa, having been ranked 87th in 2025 and 88th in 2024, with the only other restaurant on the continent to make the grade in 2026 being The Blockman in Parkhurst, Johannesburg, ranked 98th. (Cape Town's NV-80 and the Butcher Shop & Grill made the list in previous years).
The news came just days after the 2026 Eat Out Awards at which VUUR was applauded as one of the 66 best restaurants in South Africa, one of 21 in the country rated Two Stars and one of the Top 10 on the Cape's wine farms. Meals cost upwards of R2150pp, by reservation only. All cooking done over an open fire.
