Who still reckons it pays to buy your wine direct from the farm?
A SURVEY of what top reds and whites are selling for at South Africa’s leading wine shops relative to cellar-door prices points to consistency in some areas and big discrepancies in others. Those who love to visit the wine routes might be disappointed to discover, if they aren’t already well aware, that what you pay on the farm is often more than what they charge in town or what the top retailers will bill you including delivery, even.
Below are the results of online research conducted between 11 and 15 May 2018. The wines focused on are all in the 2018 Hall of Fame – those that stand out as having received top accolades (gold medal or better) from the top tasting panels for at least eight vintages within a 10-year span of vintages rated during the past 10 years. The wine shop prices given here (Rand per bottle) are limited to the lowest advertised during the period of the survey, relative to the cost at source in the winelands – although many retailers aren’t always transparent about the vintages of what’s on display in their shop windows. Full survey results available on request.

Ahem! Bottleshop now ‘selling’ HRV Chardonnay at R439 a bottle and the Pinot at R449! Should we laugh? Should we cry? Should we all boycott and send out a loud warning?
Seems time to call time on Bottleshop, whoever they are… Misleading and non-responsive. Shop to avoid?
Curiouser and curiouser. Bottleshop has raised the price of the HRV Chardonnay by R100 to R399. Still a good deal at R50 below the cellar-door price of R450 for the current-release 2017, but you gotta wonder. Still waiting to hear from the ‘sales advisor’ who I was referred to by the ‘customer service officer’. And weird that Bottleshop is now offering to source the HRV Pinot Noir 2015 at R329 – a surprise to see the red positioned lower than the white and a lot less than the cellar-door price of R495 for the 2017 vintage!
Hamilton Russell Vineyards have never sold to Bottleshop directly. I spoke to Bea de Swardt, their Business Development Exec, they do not have any stock, and the pricing and vintages are out of date. I have asked them to correct the prices and vintages or to remove the products from the site. We are currently on very tight allocations on both of these wines and do not offer any discounts.
How can wine sell for R450 on the farm but R299 from the Bottleshop?!
Bottleshop have confirmed that they have absolutely no stock of our Hamilton Russell Vineyards wines, and that the price advertised on their website is a VERY old price they have simply never updated.
Phoned the Bottleshop. James gave his assurance that if their website advertises Hamilton Russell Chardonnay at R299 a bottle then they have Hamilton Russell Chardonnay available for purchase at R299 a bottle. He said that the Bottleshop is generally not vintage-specific and that, unless a specific vintage is given on their website, it is whatever the latest/current vintage is according to the wine producer…
